After putting together one of the most successful seasons in the last 15 years during the 2022 campaign, the Lady ’Hounds’ basketball team returned to the court last week with sky-high expectations.

Led by a core group of players entering their third year of varsity together, San Benito has been making waves at early-season tournaments and has already racked up four wins in less than two weeks. With at least five more games on the schedule before the end of November, the Lady ’Hounds are creating hype and excitement around the basketball community and are looking to make back-to-back playoff appearances for the first time since 2017.

Always looking to challenge his team, longtime head coach Abel Moreno scheduled his squad for a season-opening matchup with the defending 29-5A District Champion Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial Lady Eagles. Despite falling to the Lady Eagles 46-34, the hype around the Lady ’Hounds only continued to grow as it was clear the best player on the court was wearing purple and gold.

Angelina Reyes, the junior scoring machine entering her third season as a varsity starter, led the team with 15 points while adding six steals, four rebounds, and two assists. Daisy Esquivel, one of only two seniors on the team, had a solid game with eight points, 11 rebounds, and four steals.
