The San Benito CISD school board held a regularly scheduled meeting last week in preparation for the start of the new school year. Over the course of the meeting, board members voted to approve a series of partnerships for the after-school program as well as changes to procedures for large purchases and financial decisions.
As always, the meeting started with comments from Superintendent Theresa Servellon who used her time to acknowledge the start of a new school year and a new crop of students.
The meeting quickly advanced with Board President Orlando Lopez listing a series of partnerships with the afterschool program that were all unanimously approved. The partnerships included the Girl Scouts of Greater South Texas, UTRGV School of Social Work, Texas A&M Agrilife, Cameron County Juvenile Justice Alternative program and the Children’s Advocacy Center.
The consent agenda also saw Board members approve everything from the Elementary School grading policy to the Employee Health plan. In addition to minor adjustments to the career and Technical Education courses for eighth grade students, the board was presented with two different insurance plans for employees.
A firm that board members hired last month to evaluate potential insurance plans recommended the district switch to a self-funded plan to save money across the board.
