A former IDEA San Benito campus math teacher is behind bars after allegedly sending inappropriate texts to a seventh grade student, according to police.
Ryan Canales, a former military service man, was in his first year as a full-time teacher after spending the previous years as a substitute and co-teacher. Canales allegedly sent explicit texts to a child under 14 using the messenger app WhatsApp after school hours. According to Cameron County records, Canales was given a $50,000 bond.
While the alleged incident took place while Canales was a seventh grade teacher, Idea officials maintain he had been fired before the end of last school year. Idea headquarters released the following statement following the arrest of Canales:
“IDEA Public Schools is aware of the arrest of a former staff member. After discovering the allegations last April, the individual was placed on administrative leave and terminated in late spring after an internal investigation. IDEA has taken all appropriate actions in accordance with the law and network policy. As this is an ongoing investigation, we cannot comment further. All questions should be directed to local law enforcement.”
