Flooding issue addressed at town hall

Since 1980, Resaca Vista has been one of the most scenic properties in all of San Benito.

A 39-house development situated on small piece of land along the Resaca, residents there have long enjoyed beautiful views of the resaca right in their back yard. While it is undeniably a sought-after living environment, residents of the sprawling community have dealt with flooding issues since day one, often with little support from City leaders, they say. That all seems poised to change after the new City commission has made the sub-division a priority.

Mike Frazier, a resident of Resaca Vista since 2007 and the current Homeowners Association Vice President, helped organize a town hall at the Resaca Vista Pavilion last week. Frazier, fueled by the growing concerns of the nearly 100 San Benito citizens residing in the area, “pestered” city leaders enough to get them to agree to visit Resaca Vista.

“There was a point where as soon as I got into the office, Mike was calling me asking how we were going to address the issue,” said San Benito Mayor Rick Guerra. “He calmed down and started only calling me in the afternoon, but he got his point across. Regardless of what past City Commissions have done, we’re here now to help fix the problems they have. It will be a long and tenuous endeavor, but everyone in this subdivision pays City taxes and they deserve the time an effort of any other citizen of San Benito.”

The overarching issue, according to Frazier, is that any kind of serious downpour will result in major flooding in the area, lasting anywhere from 24 to 48 hours. Any period of rain totaling over three inches would cause major problems for residents. While the last major incident was in 2021, Resaca Vista residents are anxious of the upcoming storm season. The area has not been completely forgotten as Frazier still recalls Guerra and Mayor Pro-temp Pete Galvan shoveling and handing out sandbags themselves during the last flood.
