Voters who did not cast their ballots during the early voting period, which concluded this past Tuesday, will have an opportunity to do so on Election Day, slated for this Saturday, May 6.

SAN BENITO CITY COMMISSION
In the San Benito City Commissioners’ Mayor’s race, voters have a choice between a slate of three candidates which includes incumbent mayor Ricardo “Rick” Guerra, former mayor Benjamin “Ben” Gomez and challenger Rene Garcia, San Benito’s most recent Pl. 1 City Commissioner, who surrendered his seat to run for mayor.

Running to fill the Pl. 1 Commissioner’s seat is SBCISD educator Eddie Abrego and businessman Tom Goodman. Meanwhile, in a rematch of sorts, incumbent commissioner Rene Villafranco faces challenger Deborah A. Morales for the City Commissions’ Pl. 2 seat.

SBCISD
On the San Benito Consolidated Independent School District (SBCISD) side, incumbent and former board president Orlando “Papas” Lopez faces off with Chuy’s Custom Sports Manager and current San Benito Economic Development Corporation (SBEDC) Board President Julian J. Rios for Pl. 4.

At Pl. 5 on the board of trustees, Rudy Corona hopes to retain his seat against former school district employee Jack Garcia who’s running as the incumbent.

As a reader, this election in San Benito is indeed intriguing. There’s a significant mix of experience and backgrounds among the candidates, with a particularly compelling three-way race for the mayor’s seat. It’s clear that key issues like city management, education, and economic development will be at the forefront of voters’ minds. It’s encouraging to see individuals from various walks of life step up for these important roles. This election provides an excellent opportunity for voters to shape the future of San Benito. I look forward to seeing the results and the subsequent impact on the community.
