As the final two weeks of their season approach, the Lady ’Hounds have firmly established themselves as one of the top contenders to come out of the Valley in half a decade. The only other team in their district, and possibly the entire Valley, who appear to be on the same level as San Benito has been the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons. While the Lady ’Hounds boast one of the best overall records in the entire state at 23-3, Los Fresnos is right behind at 22-3.
The two teams are the only 3-0 squads in 32-6A and were meant to face off in one of the most anticipated bouts of the year this past Tuesday. Unfortunately, due to inclement weather, this ‘clash of the titans’ was postponed. With only seven games left in the season, and the other four teams in 32-6A combining for three district wins, it appears the neighboring schools will decide the winner of the district crown this season.
For San Benito, the second year since the return of Elias Martinez has been something of a return to the glory days. The Ladies have been ranked by various softball entities anywhere from the 13th to the third-best team in all of 6A. With an 11-game winning streak under the belt, the only accolade missing from their resume is a win against the soaring Falcons.
“We’re less than halfway through the regular season, but Los Fresnos has been very impressive and that’s a game we were looking forward to,” said Martinez. “We always want to play the best so it was a disappointment, but we will see them two more times before the season ends… They will be very important games for sure.”
