With a dominant non-district season all wrapped up, the Lady ’Hounds Varsity Softball Team is gearing up for a run at another district title. Following a home victory over the Lyford Lady Bulldogs, San Benito sits at 20-3 on the season, a record good enough to be ranked number two in all of 6A softball by the Texas Girls Coaches Association.
The Lady ’Hounds are currently on an eight game winning streak and are averaging more than nine runs per game. While San Benito has not claimed a district championship since 2019, they are undoubtedly the favorites in 32-6A in their second year since the return of legendary Head Coach Elias Martinez.
“Last year we kind of underperformed by our standards, but we’ve been able to get everything where we want it to be since the end of last season,” said Martinez. “Our district is always loaded with talent, but I think we have a really special group of girls this season and we’ve had some spectacular performances already… We just have to carry over this success to the district games.”
The journey to their first district championship in four years starts on Friday, March 17, when the Lady ’Hounds host Brownsville Hanna at 11 a.m. The Golden Eagles haven’t made the playoffs since 2018 and have failed to gain momentum in the early season, stumbling to an 8-11 record. Still, the ’Hounds are taking a no-nonsense approach to this game as they try to make a statement after back-to-back fourth place finishes.
