Just two weeks into the season, the Greyhound baseball team already captured its first trophy of the season. Competing in a four team tournament over the weekend, San Benito went undefeated to capture its first tournament championship of the young season. The Greyhounds now boast a 7-4 record as they look to make the playoffs for the third consecutive season.

In the championship game against La Grulla, San Benito dominated, coming away with a 9-2 victory. For longtime Head Coach Ramiro Partida, the early season success is a sign that the program is ready to take the next step.

“We’ve had some success over these last two years, but you always want to see success carry over into the future so you can really establish a program as a contender,” said Partida. “Obviously we have a long season ahead of us, but it feels good to get those wins rolling and the team looked great all weekend.

Senior Rowen Garcia, who just wrapped up an all-district season in football, was named tournament MVP after hitting better than .500 throughout the weekend.

Following up their championship performance, the ’Hounds had a quick turnaround by pulling out a 6-3 victory over Edinburg High on Monday. The game, which also served as parents’ night, was won by San Benito’s pitching, which allowed just six hits in 31 at bats and conceded no earned runs.
