Over the last 25 years, football and softball have been at the forefront of sports in San Benito. While the occasional third sport would have a noteworthy season, there is little doubt that Greyhound athletics revolved around its two flagship programs.
That much was clear to veteran basketball coach Luis Garza when he took the reins of the basketball program before the 2021 season. Despite ceding some of his best players to football during the start of basketball season, Garza has managed to turn the Greyhound ballers into one of the top programs in the Valley in just two seasons.
With several historical milestones under his belt in just two seasons, Garza can now add 32-6A Coach of the Year to his resume after a magical season that ended in the Area Round for the first time in over two decades.
“It’s great to receive that kind of recognition because it means we had a successful season as a team and were able to reach most of our pre-season goals,” said Garza. “The support this community has shown our program has been amazing, and I’m just proud to be able to help bring that kind of success to San Benito.”
While this is the first time in nearly 15 years that a Greyhound basketball coach received any kind of coach of the year award, it’s something Garza is familiar with in his career, having won the award three times in his illustrious career.
Garza, who has earned the moniker of the “turnaround specialist,” was able to reach heights no basketball coach has reached since JFK was in the White House.
