It’s hard to imagine now, but 50 years ago, RV parks in the Valley were unheard of. That all changed in 1963, when the air base in Harlingen was forced to close and a group of investors saw the perfect opportunity.
“(The investors) purchased 25 acres from that air base and worked with the City of Harlingen to promote it as ‘Travel Trailer Caravan Headquarters of South Texas’ and that became Fun N Sun City,” said current Fun N Sun Manager John Van Wyk. “600 sites were completed by 1972… Things just continued to grow from there and here we are now 50 years later.”
To commemorate their anniversary, residents at Fun N Sun in San Benito gathered for a celebration dinner where over 800 residents and company leaders were in attendance.
Van Wyk continued to give a brief history of the RV Resort and how Fun N Sun became the most popular park in the valley despite a large influx of such companies popping up in the mid 80’s.
In addition to the speech from Van Wyk, those in attendance enjoyed a home cooked lasagna dinner with special 50th anniversary cake served as well. Van Wyk was joined by several regional managers of sister RV parks from all over the nation.
