Greyhounds back to full power, find groove

Special to the NEWS

Despite a rough start to the season, the San Benito Greyhound basketball team has more than enough reason to be optimistic about its current campaign. San Benito got off to a 0-6 start while playing the first few weeks of the season shorthanded.

Now, with several of its top stars, including Deanthony Mireless, Chris Thrailkill and Tashaun Corbin coming back to the team after football season, San Benito has gotten into the win column with three hard fought victories.

The game against Mission was a back and forth thrill ride as each team held a late lead. Ultimately, the play of Mireless and Thrailkill was enough to secure the Greyhounds’ first victory of the season.

“It’s definitely a welcomed development to have some of our top athletes back, but we still haven’t had much practice time being that we’re already well into our pre-season schedule,” noted second-year head coach Luis Garza. “Luckily district play is later in the season so we just need to maximize our time together and take advantage of our athleticism.”

In addition to waiting until mid-December to get the football players back on the team, Garza is looking at a lengthy Christmas break that will also hurt the team’s cohesion. Still, with most of the tough non-district games already played, Garza can look forward to team building as the number one priority going forward.
