After dropping five of their first six game to open the season, the Lady ’Hounds basketball team have won nine of their last 10, including a 76-5 thumping of the PSJA North Lady Raiders last week. San Benito will hope to continue their winning ways on December 6 when they host the PSJA Lady Bears.

With 16 games down, Sophomore Angelina Reyes has built upon her stellar freshman season by averaging a superb 15.2 points, 5 rebounds, and 2.5 steals a game. The second year starter led the team in scoring last year and has been even more efficient this year, making nearly 50% of her shots. What makes the Lady ’Hounds dangerous, however, is their depth and experience. Senior Ava Garza, the teams’ second leading the scorer, put up a season high 28 points in their dominant win over PSJA North.

“Our team is full of girls who know what’s expected and have been tested over the past two years,” said Head Coach Abel Moreno Jr. “We’ve played a lot of games together so hopefully our early success can carry over through the district season.”

In addition to Garza’s 28, three other players posted at least 10 points against the Lady Raiders. The 71 point win is also the biggest winning margin since Moreno took over the program.

Now boasting a 10-6 record, San Benito will be entering their final month of the season before jumping to district play in early January. After kicking off their six game December slate with PSJA, the Lady ’Hounds will start to really zero in on their best rotations in hopes to claw out a playoff spot.
