Student raises funds for shelters

Growing up in an environment where fundraising and helping charities was something his father did often, nine-year-old Victor Manuel Gonzalez III knew he could make a difference.

The now third-grade student of Ed Down Fine Arts Academy began his charity efforts in Kindergarten when he decided to organize a backpack drive to help his peers in need. Every year since then, he and his parents have held a charity drive, including a school supply drive, a blanket drive, and a food drive.

This year, the idea for his charity came when Victor overheard his father, who personally knows dog shelter owners, talk to his mother about the shelters’ need for food.

“My dad said shelters are needing food and I want to help them out so the dogs can survive the winter,” Victor said.

The drive, named “PAWS Food Drive, is aiming to raise $1,500 and as much food as possible for Donja’s Dogs and the Humane Society
