The San Benito Greyhounds continued their historic season with another dominant victory last week, advancing to the second round of the state playoffs for the first time since 2019.
The ’Hounds walked out of their Bi-district matchup with a 49-14 victory over the La Joya Coyotes.
In addition to advancing to the next round, San Benito posted the tenth victory for the fourth time in nine years under Dan Gomez. The win also sets up a second-round matchup with the 8-3 San Antonio Taft Raiders.
The Greyhounds opened up the game by methodically driving down the field with their usual punishing run game led by Fabian Garcia. After nearly a dozen plays, Garcia capped off the drive with an explosive 19-yard touchdown run.
La Joya shocked the San Benito crowd by kicking off their first drive with two trick plays- a reverse that picked up 15 yards, followed by an HB toss pass that ended in a 45-yard touchdown. San Benito managed to block the extra point to maintain their 7-6 lead.
San Benito wasted little time getting back on the scoreboard as Garcia broke off another highlight-worthy run, rumbling for a 35-yard score that capped off a short three-minute drive. After forcing La Joya into a three and out, Garcia again capped off a quick drive with a touchdown run, giving the purple and gold a 21-6 lead with 11 minutes left in the second quarter.
The Greyhounds stuck to their game plan of running the ball, despite La Joya loading up the box to slow down Garcia and company. After another long drive that took up nearly half the quarter, Atticus De Leon added another rushing touchdown to the board, bulldozing his way into the endzone from ten-yards out.
