As the holiday season approaches, a number of citywide events are scheduled to take place and the community is invited to participate.

The Lighting of the Christmas Tree is set for Dec. 1 and the parade is on Dec. 10.

Mayor Rick Guerra made these announcements during the Tuesday, Dec. 15 meeting of the San Benito City Commission. He said anyone is welcome to register if they want to participate in the parade. For more information, call the city’s park and recreation department at (956) 361-3800.

Guerra also said the local Elks Lodge will distribute 50 turkeys to area residents. The Gobblers Give Away will be held in conjunction with the school district.

In other business, the council approved buying a drum roller for street maintenance for $66,024. The action was approved by a three to two vote. Mayor Guerra and Pete Galvan voted against it. Galvan, who is the commissioner with Place 1, said the city has plenty of equipment and did not need to spend that kind of money for a new one. Anibal Garcia, the interim public works director, said the city spends $350 a day to rent the piece of equipment, adding it can add up if it’s used frequently.

The mayor and Commissioner Galvan have no common sense. They all need to be voted out need a whole new commission and need to get rid of the incompetent city manager.
