Last week, San Benito CISD Board of Trustees Vice-President Janie Lopez was elected as District 37’s state representative, amassing 20,418 total votes, defeating Harlingen businessman, Luis Villareal’s, 18,963 votes.

“As an educator and San Benito School Board Member, I saw the need in our communities for sound and reasonable representation,” Lopez said. “I wanted to be the voice that the community deserves in Willacy and Cameron counties.”

Lopez’s victory could mean a vacancy in the school board, as she is required to resign from her position with the district before she is sworn into office on Jan. 10, 2023. Lopez said she is consulting with attorneys before she decides her final move.

On the school front, Board of Trustees President Ramiro Moreno said the board has not discussed the vacancy, although the options they face, he said, are either finding someone to appoint or leave the seat open until the May 2023 elections.

“It’s not written anywhere that we have to have a seven-member board,” Moreno said. “We can continue to function as a six-member board if we cannot come to a consensus as to who to appoint, so that would then take us to the May election until somebody fills that vacancy.”
