The San Benito Greyhounds finally met their match in one of the most exciting Battle of the Arroyo matchups in recent memory.

Despite a valiant third quarter effort that briefly saw the ’Hounds regain the lead, San Benito ultimately fell to its biggest rival by a score of 37-21. With the loss, the Greyhounds drop to 7-1 on the season and have now suffered four straight Battle of the Arroyo defeats.

Harlingen quickly established itself as the toughest teams San Benito has faced this season when a simple quarterback draw on the fourth play of the game turned into a 61-yard touchdown run. Unable to match the score, the Greyhounds were forced to punt on their first two drives, but were able to pin the Cardinals inside their own five. Two plays later, however, Harlingen’s Isaiah Bell broke a 93-yard touchdown that was easily the longest play the Greyhound defense had allowed all season.

Leading 14-0 at the end of the first quarter, Harlingen had already surpassed the most points the ’Hounds had allowed in a game all season.

The San Benito defense was able to settle down and force the Cardinals to punt on their next three drives, but the Greyhound offense was plagued by untimely penalties and failed to get any momentum going.

With less than six minutes left in the first half, a perfect punt by Harlingen pinned San Benito back at its own one-yard line. Two plays later, San Benito’s Fabian Garcia sent the Purple and Gold faithful into a frenzy with a dazzling 93-yard touchdown scamper, but a late flag wiped the score off the board.
