Local singer and songwriter Pedro Saldaña is being bestowed the Legacy Award by Radio Farra Online Show, a 24-hour radio station that has been playing Saldaña’s recently recorded song, “Down in San Benito.”
“The pandemic brought down the morale of a lot of people, so we’ve been under that spell for over two years, where there’s nothing really to smile about,” Saldaña said. “So in essence, the song introduces the city and the people of San Benito, and it talks about our best times.”
Recording under the labels PCS Music Entertainment and Hill Street Blues Avenue Records, Saldaña’s two stage names are Rooster Savage and Pedro C. Saldaña, with the former used for his English recordings and the latter for his Spanish songs.
Playing rock and roll, blues and conjunto music since he was 14, the now 73-year-old Saldaña said he was inspired by his cousin, Baldemar Huerta on his mother’s side, who would eventually come to be known as Freddy Fender.
