When asked to photograph the “Corinth Girls” from Corinth Missionary Baptist Church of Harlingen performing for the residents of Golden Palms Retirement Center, this writer thought, “Well, how nice of the girls.” What this writer failed to realize until she arrived, was the significance of Sunday, August 21: National Senior Citizen Day. The residents of the center, along with grandparents of the girls, were the honored guests.

Introducing the program were Gia De Leon, Demi Deese, Amara Deese and Shailene Valdovinos. Inspirational singing, Scripture reading and a prayer were offered before poems for Senior Citizen Day were interpreted by Ciara Valdovinos, Rayven Wylie, Zohie Huerta, and Lency Butts.

Jalene Butts told the history of the day which began with a proclamation by President Ronald Reagan, August 1988 designating August 21 as National Senior Citizen Day to “recognize the contributions of seniors to our country.” At the time, President Reagan spoke, he was referring to the generation that “endured the Great Depression, both World Wars and went on to practically build the American economy.” Sitting up front were, Janie Diaz, Beatrice Lee with 106 year-old Laverne Myrick, sharing her thoughts about the day.
