Former boxer and living legend Abel Fonseca II has been fighting another battle with his health after beating cancer more than two years ago.
The former trainer has been battling graft vs host disease (GvHD) from the blood transfusion he received from his brother, Tyler, in 2019.
GvHD is a rare condition in which the donated blood stem cells attack the recipient’s body. Fonseca’s condition is even rarer, as GvHD is usually focused on a certain location in the body, but in his case, it affects his entire body but mainly his legs, arms, stomach, and hands.
After his cancer diagnosis in 2018, Fonseca received a stem cell transplant from his brother the following year.
“If it wasn’t for my brother’s transplant, I probably wouldn’t be here right now,” Fonseca said.
After 100 days in the hospital following the transplant, Fonseca returned home in late 2019.
