Palmville Homes has been a fixture in San Benito since 1966 when the first tenant moved in. At that time, it was only the third public housing community in San Benito and consisted of 50 apartments.
While the complex soon doubled in size to 100 apartments, the construction and infrastructure has seen little improvement over the past 55 years. Now, thanks to a concerted effort from city officials and a massive $19 million commitment, Palmville is getting some much needed improvements to its infrastructure.
Board members from the San Benito Housing Authority were joined by Mayor Ricardo Guerra and State Senator Eddie Lucio Jr last week for a groundbreaking on the new construction. Each apartment will see improvement in size and function over the next year and half.
“The building foundations and exterior walls are in good condition, but the roof, plumbing, electrical, and kitchen area will need to be replaced,” said Guerra. “Plus, many are extremely small at only 370 square feet of living area. Some apartments don’t even have air conditioning. We’ll be able to modernize these apartments with this construction.”
