city logoAfter learning of the proposal to designate boundaries for a San Benito downtown district, business owners in the city are showing excitement about the many opportunities they say it could present.

“I think it’s a great idea. It’s something that we need,” said Shirley Vega on Thursday. “We just joined the Texas Downtown Association, and since we’re a member of the Downtown Association, we need a designated downtown in order to qualify for funding, grants, and other programs that are available to beautify our downtown.”

Vega, along with her husband Pablo Vega, owns Vega Apartments and Vega Gutters; she is headquartered currently where many already consider the downtown area: Sam Houston Boulevard.

As first reported by the San Benito News Wednesday on sbnewspaper.com, Mayor Jack Garcia’s proposal for the designation of boundaries for a proposed downtown district was deferred to the city staff at the regular meeting of the San Benito City Commission on Tuesday, March 15.
