skate picThe San Benito Parks and Recreation Board is proposing some changes to Stookey Park, including the decommissioning of the pool to make way for both a skateboard and a spray park.

“We would really like to rename that park. We would like to the park after someone who really contributed to this community, to sports, to the kids in general, just a big contributor, and I don’t mean moneywise. It just means time and energy that moved this city along,” said Parks and Recreation Director Alisha Milligan. “Right now it’s named after a street (Stookey Road). Stookey Park is not even the real name. There’s a sign out there that says ‘Stookey Park’, but the real name is San Benito Municipal Park. Very few people even know that.”

The board would like to rededicate the facilities as well as going to the citizens for help naming the park.

“We would like to ask the community to send in some names,” Milligan said. “The only guidelines we really have are that the person is deceased, and that they at one time lived in San Benito. It could be someone who played ball here and went on to be a football star … or something like that.”
