LOS INDIOS, TX—Diamantina Ortega Bennett, 79, went to be with our Lord on Monday, September 9, 2013, at Harlingen Medical Center in Harlingen, Texas. She was born December 20, 1933 and served as the first mayor of Los Indios from September 1994 to September 2010. Diamantina also served on many community organizations and projects in the area. She retired from Dolly Vinsant Hospital in 2000 where she made lifetime friends.
Diamantina is preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Reyes Aguilar; her brother, Pedro Aguilar; and the father of her children, Samuel J. Ortega.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Bennett; sister, Ninfa Aguilar; her children, Xavier (Blanca) Ortega, Yvette Ortega, Samuel (Rosie) Ortega, Jr.; Yvonne (Jaime) Rodriguez, Sergio (Liz) Ortega, Ninfa Ortega, and Jaime (Minerva) Ortega; her grandchildren, Xavier Jr.; Krystle, Frankie, Danny, Jordan, Samuel III, Analiza, Alejandro and Ava Rodriguez, Alison and Madison Ortega, Heather Campos, Gabriel Ortega, Katrina, Diego, Christian, Mariana; and her great-grandchildren, Ximena Ortega and Nico Arizola.
A special thanks to Carlota Calderon, Sandra Gonzalez, Alicia Vargas, Maria Flores, Carmen Reta, Raul Gonzalez, Jr., and Nereyda Gonzalez, who cared for our mother during her long battle with Alzheimers.
Visitation will be held today on September 11, 2013 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a prayer of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m., with Mrs. Moises Vela and Patsy Vela.
Funeral mass will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2013 at 9:00 a.m. at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in San Benito, Texas. Interment will follow to Las Rusias Cemetery.
