RIO HONDO – Ryan Salazar, 7, received a Cameron County Department of Health and Human Services Certificate of Recognition on May 30 for being a second place winner in the first through second grade category of the 2013 Texas Department of State Health Services Zoonosis Rabies Awareness and Prevention Poster Contest.

The contest was sponsored by the DSHS which also provided Ryan with a Nintendo 3DS for submitting a winning poster. All winning posters will be publicized on the DSHS website and artwork from top-ranking posters may be used for future state sponsored educational materials. Ryan is a student at the Rio Hondo/Lozano Family Learning Center and the son of Elaine Escamilla from Rio Hondo and Rafael Salazar from Harlingen.

Also, runners-up from the Rio Hondo Family Learning Center who received a Certificate of Awesome Art Award were Jose Barrientos in the first through second grade category, Iliana Garcia in the third through fifth grade category and Layla Garcia in the sixth through seventh grade category.
