The Cameron County Emergency Communication District has announced that there will be changes coming to its Emergency Telephone Number Service, 9-1-1, in the near future.

“Over the last few years, the U.S. government (and other entities) have expressed interest in converting emergency (and similar) communications from analog to digital, reflecting advances in electronics and computer, radio and telephone, for reasons of safety, security, expediency, efficiency and technology,” CCECD attorney Brian G. Janis stated in a press release.

The CCECD, dispatching centers and emergency services providers and responders are now required to upgrade the 9-1-1 service to the new generation 9-1-1, or NG 9-1-1. After reviewing the revenue projections and anticipated expenses with the need to implement NG 9-1-1 in Cameron County, Janis stated the CCECD determined that an increase in its Emergency Service Fee per landline be implemented.
