The San Benito Greyhound Varsity Soccer Team secured a decisive 4-0 home win against a Brownsville Veterans Memorial Chargers team that had already clinched the District 32-6A title before its regular season finale at Bobby Morrow Stadium on Tuesday.
Still, the victory bodes well for the ‘Hounds, who secured their second-place position in the district even with one game remaining at Harlingen on Friday.
SBHS improved to 5-2 (12-5-1 overall) and remained ahead of the Los Fresnos Falcons (4-3, 15-7-2) in the standings.
SB Soccer Team Head Coach William Huerta said it’s been a good season, and a victory over a sound Veterans team put a smile on many local faces.
“It’s always a plus to get wins. It’s also a learning experience and opportunity to get better before getting into the playoffs,” Coach Huerta said.
Veterans fell to 6-1-1 in district and 14-5-1 this season, losing to SBHS for the first time after beating the ’Hounds at home last month.
In the Tuesday match, the ‘Hounds, despite having the wind against them, scored in the sixth minute.
Jiovanni Najera looked to teammate Francisco Barrientos, who was trying to get out against three Charger defenders.
Najera’s roller was from 15 yards out.
SBHS’s three goals in the second half came inside the final 18 minutes of play.
Elias Olvera scored the second goal on a penalty kick after the Veterans were called with a charging foul. The eventual penalty call was set up off a corner kick.
Barrientos scored the ‘Hounds’ third goal in the 65th minute after receiving a header from Isaac Hernandez.
The Veterans’ goalie never had a chance to defend as the two SBHS players worked their magic from just five yards away from the net.
The home team closed out the scoring in the 72nd minute on an Emmanuel Trejo header in front of the goal. Diego Martinez earned the assist off a cross to the middle.
SBHS goalie William Montoya had two saves.
The Class Division I playoffs will be on March 19-21.
“We tell these kids to take it day by day and to stay humble and hungry if they want to make a good run in the playoffs,” Coach Huerta said.
On the girls’ side, the Lady Greyhounds lost, 2-0, at home against the Veterans Memorial Lady Chargers.
Despite the loss, SBHS qualified for the postseason with a fourth place finish, ahead of the Brownsville Hanna Lady Eagles, who it defeated twice.
Veterans needed its two goals in the second half to secure the victory, the initial score coming in the 50th minute.
The Veterans (5-2, 17-7-2) claimed the second place spot in District 32-6A.
The Lady ‘Hounds fell to 2-5 in district and evened its win/loss season total to an even dozen in each category.
Like the boys, the girls will play their district finale at Harlingen.
The Lady Cardinals (7-0, 18-0) clinched the district title outright after defeating the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons the same night.
Los Fresnos (3-4, 7-14) already has third place secured, two of its wins coming against SBHS.
