The San Benito Lady Greyhounds finally got their first taste of district competition two months into the season, and it started the way they have been accustomed to doing — winning.
Last Friday, they traveled to Brownsville to face the Hanna Lady Eagles and left the gym with a 48-38 victory. Then, on Tuesday, they hosted the Los
The victory put SBHS in first place in District 32-6A play with a 2-0 record, ahead of the Harlingen Lady Cardinals, who are 1-0.
Both Los Fresnos and Hanna are 0-1, and the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Lady Chargers are also winless after one game.
For the season, the Lady ‘Hounds are 10-16, having recently played in a Corpus Christi tournament.
For the boys, the district can’t start soon enough, as the Greyhounds have struggled.
They have games spread out, with their district opener scheduled for Jan. 20 at Veterans Memorial High School against the Chargers.
Unfortunately, in the past two games, late last week and Tuesday, the Greyhounds went down in defeat.
The ‘Hounds lost in non-district road games to the Edinburg Bobcats (64-51) and the La Joya Coyotes (74-46).
San Benito is 6-15 on the season.
In Rio Hondo, for the first time this year, the Rio Hondo Lady ’Cats were ranked first in the state, but they couldn’t prove it on the basketball court after two schools forfeited their district games.
Two winless IDEA teams, the Sports Park Lady Stingrays (0-8) and the Weslaco Pike Lady Mavericks (0-5), did not play RHHS, and the results were recorded as 2-0 forfeit losses for each team.
The Lady ’Cats have another IDEA school scheduled for Friday as they travel to Frontier College Prep, which is winless at 0-8.
Nevertheless, RHHS improved its District 32-3A record to 9-0 and is 20-1 on the year.
According to the Texas Girls Coaches Association poll, RHHS ranks first, ahead of Coahoma (23-1), Dalhart (20-3), Fairfield (19-3), and Wall (24-3).
The Bobcats, meanwhile, are grouped in a district with a lot of parity.
RHHS’s district record is a testament to this, as it sits in fifth place with a 5-3 winning record.
The Bobcats lost to IDEA Sports Park, 45-29, last week, but returned to the court Tuesday and defeated an overmatched IDEA Robindale team, 78-16.
In the district standings, the teams ahead of the Bobcats, in order of record, are IDEA Sports Park (7-1), Lyford (7-1), IDEA Riverview (6-2), and Santa Rosa (5-2).
RHHS is 8-10 this season.
