The San Benito Lady Greyhound varsity soccer players concluded the scrimmage portion of their season and are ready to take on all comers now that their play will count heavily toward district down the road.
In eight December scrimmages, the Lady ‘Hounds won five matches and tied three.
Their pitch play culminated in the annual Alumni Game last Saturday at Bobby Morrow Stadium.
Against the alumni team, the former players posed a unique challenge to the varsity team.
The Lady ’Hounds lost their friendly game by a 4-3 margin.
Head Coach Wilbert Padron said it was an entertaining night for everyone involved. He thanked those who competed, as well as their family and friends.
“The youthful energy of a current team was tested by the experience and grit of those who once wore the same colors,” Padron said. “They were part of something special, and we hope to continue seeing them in the bleachers throughout the season.”
In scrimmages against other varsity teams, San Benito began their season with a 1-0 win over the Brownsville Lopez Lady Lobos and a 1-1 draw with the Laredo United Lady Longhorns.
Against the PSJA Memorial Lady Wolverines a week later, SBHS finished with a 1-1 draw.
It was their last tie.
More recently, the Lady ‘Hounds defeated the Brownsville Porter Lady Cowgirls, 2-0, in their last December match.
A week earlier, they secured a 4-3 victory over the Laredo LBJ Lady Wolves. The match ended in a 3-3 draw, but SBHS won in penalty kicks.
In a tri-match that featured the Brownsville Pace Lady Vikings and the Mission Veterans Lady Patriots, SBHS shut out Pace, 3-0, and defeated the Veterans, 2-1.
“I am proud of the fight, resilience, and togetherness as this continues to grow,” Padron said. “They showcased excellent effort and discipline on the field; there is plenty of room to improve, but we are building the right way.”
