For families facing food insecurity in Cameron County, a new commercial freezer at the San Benito Food Pantry represents more than upgraded equipment — it means expanded access to nutritious food and greater support during times of need.

ACCIONA Energía recently donated $24,250 to the San Benito Food Pantry, funding the purchase of commercial freezers and additional food supplies to help the nonprofit better serve families throughout the region.

The donation is part of the company’s Social Impact Management program, which reinvests a portion of revenue from its renewable energy operations into the communities where it operates.

According to a company spokesperson, ACCIONA Energía selects nonprofit partners that align with its giving strategy, which focuses on addressing local community needs in health and wellness, education, and sustainability.

The San Benito Food Pantry has received the company’s donations since 2022.

The new freezers are expected to significantly increase the pantry’s service capacity by expanding storage for frozen meats, vegetables, and other staples, supplementing the shelf-stable items currently distributed.

Pantry leaders say this added storage will allow them to offer a more balanced selection of food to families who rely on the pantry for regular assistance.

“This generous donation allows us to purchase more food and serve additional families across Cameron County who are truly in need,” said Forest Walker, CEO of the San Benito Food Pantry. “Without support like this, we simply wouldn’t be able to reach as many people. The demand continues to grow, and donations like this help ensure families can put food on the table.”

Walker said the pantry currently serves approximately 6,800 people each month, a number that continues to rise amid increasing economic pressures and fluctuating public assistance programs.

Families are traveling from across the Rio Grande Valley to seek assistance, underscoring the growing demand for food resources in the region.

In addition to supporting food access, ACCIONA Energía has invested in local education through a $5,000 scholarship at Texas State Technical College, supporting students pursuing technical and workforce-focused education and strengthening long-term economic opportunity.

According to the company, ACCIONA Energía owns and operates three wind farms in Cameron County and has contributed more than $400,000 in charitable donations across the United States and Canada this year. Local giving decisions are reviewed annually to ensure alignment with evolving community needs.

Beyond financial contributions, the company encourages employee involvement in community initiatives. In Cameron County, employees have participated in school programs and supported first responders through fundraising events that benefit local charities.

Looking ahead, the company plans to continue supporting local nonprofits.

It has expressed interest in expanding its partnership with Texas State Technical College in 2026, with a continued focus on workforce development and education.

As Cameron County continues to grow, partnerships between local nonprofits and private organizations are increasingly important to strengthen community resilience.

For families served by the San Benito Food Pantry, the impact of this donation will be felt not only in upgraded equipment but also in fuller freezers and greater food security.
