Boys’ and girls’ basketball teams for San Benito and Rio Hondo high schools are playing games that count toward their district standings, while others are still playing non-district games.

The Lady Greyhounds’ most recent home game this week against the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Lady Bears, came down to the wire, but they lost 37-32.

SBHS is 5-14. Their last victory was against Port Isabel in tournament play.

Head Coach Abel Moreno said the Lady ‘Hounds have some good moments in games but struggle at times.

“They’re still learning their roles,” Moreno said.

Some of his players have missed games due to injury or other reasons, which can affect their performance on the basketball court.

“I don’t want to use that as an excuse; our girls know they have to step in and score points. They have to step up their game, and sometimes they struggle.”

An increase in game minutes, at times, allows the Lady ‘Hounds to showcase their talents or expose flaws.

“They’re adjusting to each other,” Moreno said.

Since the Brownsville ISD Tournament the first week of the month, San Benito has lost to Weslaco (69-22), Edinburg North (29-13) and Edinburg (71-21).

Last year, the Lady ‘Hounds and Edinburg North played in a Class 6A bi-district game that SBHS won. Both teams look to return to the postseason.

For the Lady ‘Hounds, District 32-6A play begins January 9 at Brownsville Hanna.

On the boys’ side, the ‘Hounds are also playing their non-district portion of their schedule.

They are taking all opponents before their district play begins next month.

SBHS will host the La Feria Lions on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

The ‘Hounds have a 3-12 season record, while the Lions are at 7-8.

Their games at the McAllen Tournament resulted in three losses to La Joya (57-53), Mission (79-42), and Brownsville Lopez (52-49).

The Rio Hondo Lady Bobcats are once again proving they are not only a formidable team in South Texas, but also in District 32-3A.

They own a 16-1 season record and are now 4-0 in the district.

One of those home victories was against the Lyford Lady Bulldogs, 42-40.

The win marked two consecutive victories against Lyford, going back to the Santa Rosa Tournament.

Other district wins came against IDEA College Prep (82-6), Progreso (90-28), and this week’s IDEA Riverview (47-19).

The Lady ’Cats will now travel to play the Santa Rosa Lady Warriors next Tuesday at 12 p.m.

The Bobcats host the Santa Rosa Warriors at home next Tuesday, beginning at 11:30 a.m.

The boys have a 1-1 record in District 32-6A.

Their recent games were a district-opening win against the P rogreso Red Ants (87-25), followed by a loss to the Lyford Bulldogs (57-37).

Earlier this month, the Bobcats competed in the La Feria Tournament. They lost to Harlingen (58-43) and Jubilee Brownsville (60-54) and defeated Santa Maria (49-39).
