With the Thanksgiving holiday, there weren’t many games played for the San Benito and Rio Hondo teams.

The Greyhounds returned to the court against the Edinburg North Cougars on Tuesday, Dec. 2, but lost in a non-district game on the road, Head Coach Nate Garza said.

The first-year coach and his team will play again at home next week versus the Weslaco Panthers.

San Benito is 1-6 so far this season in all non-district games. They will continue to play in District 32-6A games until late January.

The Bobcats, who compete in Class 3A, earned their first win of the season by defeating the La Joya Juarez Lincoln Wolves, 56-33, on the same night.

They evened their record to 1-1. The Bobcats will likely face teams in the coming weeks that have played many more basketball games than they have.

“It was great for these boys to come out victorious. It’s only our second game of this season, so we are still trying to get our footing,” Rio Hondo Head Coach Mike Alvarez said. “Our boys came out with great hustle and intensity, providing full-court pressure all game, which led to layups in transition. We played an excellent defensive game, and our offense is coming along as well.”

Michael Lopez led Rio Hondo in points with 18. He also had a team-high 11 rebounds.

Albert Villalovos contributed 14 points and five assists. Alex Trevino had eight points, and Sebastian Gonzalez put in four points with eight rebounds and six steals.

The Bobcats began competing in the Hidalgo Tournament on Thursday against Vanguard Academy Beethoven. Rio Hondo plays through Saturday in Hidalgo.

“Most teams have already played about five to seven games,” Alvarez said.

“The Hidalgo tournament will be a great opportunity to work on lineups and see how our guys can mesh well together. It’s a lot of games in a span of three days, and I am looking forward to seeing who steps up for my young team.”
