The San Benito Lady Greyhound Varsity Basketball Team began competing in the PSJA Tournament this week, with an overall record of 4-7.
Their first tournament game was on Thursday against the PSJA Southwest Lady Javelinas.
There is still a lot of time for San Benito Head Coach Luis Garza and his players to get acclimated to playing together, as District 32-6A play doesn’t begin until late next month.
They aim to replicate the success they had at the 33rd Annual Border Bash, which was held in McAllen.
Thirty-two teams competed in the November tourney.
Coach Garza said the Lady ‘Hounds “demonstrated significant improvement” with three tournament wins.
All-Tourney honors went to Hailey Davila, who consistently delivered double-digit points in multiple games, Garza said.
Days following Thanksgiving Day, the Lady ‘Hounds suited up against the McAllen Memorial Lady Mustangs.
Their road game resulted in a 66-27 loss. Senior Aaliyah Puente had 10 points and six rebounds.
San Benito followed it up with a victory against the previously undefeated San Perlita Lady Trojans.
The 36-27 win on the road in Willacy County got started fast for San Benito as it raced out to a 14-6 first-quarter lead. The defense kept the Lady Trojans, who fell to 8-1, from scoring in double digits in any of their four quarters of play.
The Lady ‘Hounds recently attended a Rio Grande Valley Vipers basketball game at the Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg. The Vipers play in the G-League and are an affiliate of the NBA’s Houston Rockets.
Rio Hondo, meanwhile, began district play with a win.
The Rio Hondo Lady ’Cats got back to winning as they opened District 32-3A play resoundingly, defeating IDEA Weslaco Pike, 112-3.
The Lady ’Cats came fresh off the Lyford Tournament, where they placed second.
Rio Hondo’s season record is 8-1.
Sophomore Carlie Rodriguez had a game high 50 points. Senior Abigail Atkinson had 21 points, and junior Samantha Flores had 12 points.
Everyone on the eight-person roster scored.
