LYFORD, TX—The Rio Hondo Lady Bobcat Varsity Basketball Team placed second at the Dr. Keillor Classic Tournament while also improving to an impressive 7-1 record for the season.
They advanced to the tournament’s title game, where the host Lady Bulldogs won, 57-47.
“They faced some adversity during the championship game versus Lyford, and I feel that’s going to help tremendously down the road moving forward,” Rio Hondo Head Coach Victor Sauceda said.
The Lady ’Cats were down by 12 points to begin the game.
During the three-day tournament, Rio Hondo defeated IDEA Riverview (69-15), PSJA Memorial (69-53), and Edcouch-Elsa (54-42).
The Lady ’Cats are on an extended break, according to their schedule.
Their last game at the tournament was played Nov. 22, and they will not compete again until Tuesday, Dec. 2, when they open up district play at Weslaco IDEA Pike.
A few days later, from Thursday to Saturday, Dec. 4-6, Rio Hondo will compete in the Lyford Tournament.
From December through February, district games are scheduled.
“The girls are settling into their roles on the team and are bringing what they do well to the table every time we step on the court,” Sauceda said. “I’m pleased with the progression and fight that they have displayed over the last few games.”
The Rio Hondo Bobcats, meanwhile, are just starting their season with two non-district games against Hidalgo County teams.
They will have a clearer idea by mid-next month of what they have to offer on the court with two tournaments on their schedule.
They are scheduled to compete at the Hidalgo Tournament from Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 4-6, followed by the La Feria Tournament from Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 11-13.
On Tuesday, Dec. 16, the Bobcats have their district opener (Parents’ Night) against the Progreso Red Ants beginning at 7 p.m.
Michael Alvarez is the Bobcats’ head coach.
