Gridiron campaign closes, runners recognized

The end — The 2025 Texas High School Varsity Football Season came to an end for San Benito Friday night in the Bi-District Round of the postseason, as San Benito fell to the Weslaco Panthers, 33-0. The ’Hounds had a difficult schedule this season, playing powerhouse teams like the State Champions Carthage Bulldogs, and the 2024 Runner-up State Champions, Austin Westlake Chaparrals. WESLACO, TX—The San Benito Greyhounds’ football season has concluded, and for the second consecutive year, it closely mirrors last year’s.

The ‘Hounds were shut out in a bi-district game against the Weslaco Panthers at Bobby Lackey Stadium, this time by a score of 33-0. Last year, San Benito also lost, 28-0, in a Class 6A Division I game there.

In the past two seasons, the two teams played a competitive non-district game that was not decided until the fourth quarter.

But it wasn’t enjoyable for San Benito the second time around when the stakes were much higher. Since 2023, when the two were in the same district, Weslaco has beaten San Benito five times in a row.

This year, San Benito finished with a familiar 2-9 record. It’s a complete reversal of what occurred three to four years ago, in 2022 and 2023, when San Benito earned double-digit victories under Head Coach Dan Gomez.

The ‘Hounds, who have been placed in a small District 32-6A the past two years, needed two wins in a four-game schedule to make the postseason. Since they started district play during the second week of October, they were still looking for their first victory.

Similar to last year, it came at the expense of the Brownsville Hanna Eagles.

This season, they also outperformed the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Chargers but lost to the Harlingen Cardinals.

Last year, San Benito won the annual Battle of the Arroyo at Boggus Stadium in the district finale.

Meanwhile the San Benito CISD Board of Trustees acknowledged the cross-country team’s efforts.

Members of the San Benito Greyhounds cross-country team were invited to a San Benito CISD Board of Trustees meeting to be recognized for their achievements.

It was just a few weeks ago that the boys’ team finished second at the District 32-6A Meet held at San Benito High School.

The team advanced to the regional meet two weeks later.

Among the runners who attended the board meeting were seniors Joe Ibarra, Aaron Rostro, and Kevin Martinez; juniors Jordan Arredondo and Nehemiah Rivera; sophomore John Montemayor; and senior Josiah Rivera. Head Coach Jose Torres was also in attendance.

The hounds need a new head coach and perhaps.. replace the whole coaching staff. But again.. I would like to know who Gomez is related to in the district for him to continuously lose games and still keep his job. We went from back to back district champs to winning 2 games.. 1 a given and the other a fluke.
