Ochoa announces run for State Rep.

HARLINGEN, TX —Lifelong Rio Grande Valley resident Oziel “Ozzie” Ochoa Jr. officially announced his candidacy for Texas State Representative, District 37 in the upcoming Democratic Primary.

Ochoa, a native of Harlingen, respected educator and community leader, brings 17 years of experience in public education and a lifelong commitment to service, faith, and family, according to his announcement.

“I’m running to provide strong, local representation for families and promote unity across the RGV,” said Ochoa. “Our community deserves a representative who will prioritize education, public safety, veterans, women’s rights, and economic growth, someone who listens, serves, and stands up for South Texas families.”

Ochoa’s deep roots in the community reflect his lifelong dedication to hard work and service.

Born at Dolly Vinsant Hospital formally in San Benito, he is the son of a Bronze Star Vietnam veteran from Monte Morelos, Mexico, and a 35-year veteran of HCISD’s child nutrition program.

He credits his parents with instilling in him the grit, determination, and sense of purpose that drive his leadership today.

A graduate of Harlingen South High School, Ochoa earned a B.S. in Kinesiology from UTPA (2008), a Master’s in Educational Leadership from Lamar University (2011), and recently completed the Superintendent Program at UTRGV (2024).

Over his 17-year career in education, he has served as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, and principal, and currently works as the Director of Special Education for a local education agency, according to his biography.

A devoted husband and father, Ochoa and his wife, Myra Reyna Ochoa, are the parents of Quinn (eight) and Crew (four).

A man of faith, he is a Catholic and a member of the Knights of Columbus, committed to leading with integrity and compassion.

“I believe in the power of our people and the strength of our community,” said Ochoa. “Every voice matters. Every family counts. Cada Voz Importa, Cada Familia Cuenta. Together, we can make a lasting difference for District 37 and the entire Rio Grande Valley.”
