’Hounds fall to Los Fresnos

The San Benito Greyhounds suffered their first District 32-6A loss of the season at the hands of the visiting Los Fresnos Falcons, 42-25, last Friday at San Benito’s Bobby Morrow Stadium.

The San Benito offense continued to show signs of improvement against a district foe that played its first district contest.

The ‘Hounds’ defense had its troubles containing an explosive Falcons’ offense that remained undefeated through seven games this season. They are averaging 44 points per game.

Falcons quarterback Robert Pjneda passed for 253 yards on 11 completions and threw 4 TDs. He also had two rushing TDs.

The teams were knotted at 7-7 at one point in the second quarter.

San Benito scored first on a Peter Buenrostro 24-yard run with 5:49 showing in the first quarter clock. Kicker Elias Olvera had a follow-up point after.

Los Fresnos responded on the following offensive drive with a touchdown on a pass play.

The Falcons led by as much as 21-7. Two field goals by the ‘Hounds’ second kicker, Francisco Barrientos, closed the gap at 21-13.

Barrientos booted his first five seconds before the half and then the junior followed his second from 36 yards with 1:47 in the third quarter.

Unfortunately, the Falcons came alive offensively in the final frame, scoring two consecutive touchdowns for a 35-13 lead.

San Benito scored twice more in the fourth on quarterback Albert Gonzalez’s one-yard run and then later on his 22-yard pass play to Buenrostro. A couple of two-point after attempts didn’t materialize for the ‘Hounds.

Gonzalez was sacked eight times by five different Los Fresnos defenders.

The loss puts the ‘Hounds in fourth place in district with a 1-1 record and 1-7 on the season, ahead of Brownsville Hanna (0-2, 2-6).

The Falcons (7-0 season) and Harlingen Cardinals (2-5 season) are tied for first in district with identical 1-0 records. Brownsville Veterans Memorial is 1-1 in district and 7-1 on the year.

San Benito has an upcoming bye week. The final district games are at Sams Stadium against Veterans on Oct. 31 and then the Battle of the Arroyo against Harlingen at home, Nov. 7.
