Miguel Monrreal was apprehended a day after the shooting which took place on East Stenger St. in San Benito.

There is no ongoing threat to the community, announced City officials on the City’s Facebook page on Saturday.

“The City of San Benito thanks its officers and partnering law enforcement agencies for their swift action and commitment to keeping the community safe,” read a statement from the City.

San Benito police searched for an armed suspect following the fatal shooting, which took place late Friday night in the 900 block of East Stenger St. One male victim died during the altercation, and a female victim was listed in critical condition.

The suspect was identified as Miguel Monrreal, 23, of Los Fresnos.

Monrreal is described as a Hispanic male, approximately 5’9” tall and 180 pounds, with tattoos on his arms, ankles, and neck. He fled the scene on foot and was considered armed and dangerous.

Around 10:34 p.m. on October 3, officers responded to a 911 call about gunfire. When they arrived, they found a man and a woman, both in their 20s, with gunshot injuries, a SBPD report reads.

The victims were taken to a nearby hospital, where the man was later declared dead.

Investigators believe the shooting occurred after a group of individuals who were spending time together got into a verbal and physical altercation.

“This was a tragic and senseless act of violence,” said SBPD Police Chief Mario Perea shortly after the incident. “Our officers are working around the clock to locate Mr. Monrreal and bring him into custody. We urge anyone who may see him not to approach, as he is considered armed and dangerous.”
