The City of San Benito, through the San Benito Community Development Corporation (SBCDC), is offering financial help to residents impacted by COVID-19.

The program provides up to six months of assistance for essential expenses, including utilities (water, gas, and electricity), rent, and mortgage. Payments are made directly to utility providers, landlords, property managers, or mortgage lenders on behalf of eligible residents.

“This assistance is meant to support residents still feeling the effects of the pandemic, even years later,” city officials said. “If you’re unsure whether you qualify, we encourage you to call and find out.”

Funding is limited, and applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Residents interested in applying can call the City of San Benito at (956) 541-4955 during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

As of late August 2025, Texas is experiencing a significant increase in COVID-19 cases, driven by the emergence of the XFG “Stratus” variant. Wastewater data indicate that viral activity levels are “very high,” especially in major metropolitan areas like Austin, Houston, and Dallas-Fort Worth.

The XFG strain now accounts for about 71% of COVID-19 cases circulating in the U.S., according to expressnews.com.

In response to the ongoing pandemic, the City of San Benito encourages residents to use the financial assistance program to cover essential expenses. For more information or to apply, residents can contact the City of San Benito at (956) 541-4955 during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
