San Benito High School has been successful in various facets of fall sports in recent days, including volleyball and cross-country.
Both the San Benito boys’ and girls’ cross country teams participated in the Mission Veterans Invitational at Anzalduas Park, which was the final competition before they set their sights on the district meet.
The boys’ team finished third overall, thanks partly to the performance of top ‘Hounds’ runner, Joe Ibarra, who finished first overall in a 74-person race.
The invitation champ finished with a time of 16:01.5 in an event that fielded 11 teams.
Among the other SBHS runners whose finishes were counted for third place were Aaron Rostro (12th, 17:17.1), Kevin Martinez (14th, 17:41.9), Jordan Arredondo (32nd, 18:53.8), and Josiah Rivera (33rd, 18:55.3).
The other runners to compete were Jon Montemayor (37th, 19:07.6), Nehemiah Rivera (57th, 20:07.3), and Jesus Millan (58th, 20:32.8).
In the junior varsity race that had 125 runners, San Benito’s Aaron Huerta finished 15th with a 19:32.5 time.
In the freshman race made up of 66 runners, Gabriel De Leon placed 11th (10:53.9) and Nathan Cervantes 19th (11:08.7).
San Benito Girls Head Coach Sonia White entered a varsity team in a race that had 11 teams and 80 runners.
Among the SBHS runners and their finishes were Alexia Delgado 57th (24:15.7 time), Madisann Murillo 61st (24:30.9), Annabella Garza 70th (26:09.8), Rebecca Sanchez 75th (27.04.6) and Yadhira Hernandez 78th (28:30.9).
In the JV race, which had 144 runners, Mary Jayne Herrera (114th) and Alyssandra De la Rosa (116th) represented SBHS.
The freshman race had 50 runners, and SBHS entered Analie Mosqueda (16th), Kaylie Maciel (24th), and Sophia Villafranca (25th).
Coach White said, “The girls ran well and have improved since the season started.”
Volleyball recovers from pre-district finale
The Lady Greyhounds opened District 32-6A play at Brownsville and defeated the Hanna Lady Eagles in four sets, 26-24, 25-18, 20-25 and 25-16.
It was a big victory against Hanna after a nightmarish season last year in which San Benito lost all its district matches to other foes like Harlingen, Los Fresnos, and Brownsville Veterans Memorial.
The Lady ‘Hounds are off to a great start if they plan to once again hoist district title like they did in 2023.
San Benito responded in a big way after it finished the pre-district portion of its schedule against the Edinburg Lady Bobcats.
Lady ‘Hounds Head Coach Ruby Medina said her team “battled valiantly” as they fell by 25-23, 25-18, 25-19 scores.
“Our team demonstrated a great competitive job against a strong 31-6A volleyball program,” Medina said.
Top contributors were Annalise Rodriguez (5 kills), Valeria Enriquez (4 kills, ace), and Jayla Delgado (4 aces).
