Museum welcomes Salazar

YOU AND ME: LATEX PAINT, TAPE, AND CLOTHESLINE ON CANVAS

Special to the NEWS

The City of San Benito’s Cultural Arts Department (CAD) welcomes Erick B. Salazar for his first solo exhibition in a museum space.

Closer to Now: Under the Effect of Form & Color will be on view at the San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum.

Salazar, a Rio Grande Valley native, began his path in the arts after his military service with the United States Marine Corps.

After receiving his B.F.A. in Sculpture and Painting from the University of North Texas in Denton, Salazar began a career with the Water Production Department for San Antonio Water System, where he remained for nine years before making his official return to his artistic practice in 2021.

Closer to Now: Under the Effect of Form & Color showcases Salazar and his body of work as they stand today — each piece reflects the thoughts, emotions, and reactions he experienced at the moment of creation.

Emphasizing each piece as a vital part of his life involves exploring both technique and medium; many works in Closer to Now reflect a return to techniques from his early career, but on new mediums and with his current understanding of his process.

This collection of over 30 pieces — a mix of collage, paper types, canvas, wood, and paint bases — creates a musical and visual experience. Each piece, from drip paint to precision-edge, multi-colored, and multi-layered lines, captures the rhythm and texture of family life in South Texas. His careful study of everyday life and introspective observations have a direct influence on his art, which often emphasizes line, color, shape, and texture.

The opening reception for Closer to Now: Under the Effect of Form & Color is scheduled for Thursday, September 25, 2025, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum.

The exhibition runs until November 15, 2025. The San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum is open Monday-Thursday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., and on Fridays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Guided tours and in-person visits are available during the exhibit dates. Virtual programs, including video presentations, interviews, and tours, will be accessible through CAD’s social media platforms.

The San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum is located at 250 E. Heywood St., San Benito.
