BROWNSVILLE, TX —After competing in the Brownsville ISD Volleyball Tournament last week, the San Benito Lady Greyhounds played in their first “home” match of the year at Veterans Memorial Academy.

Two weeks into the season, the Lady ‘Hounds took care of business at nearby VMA while their SBHS gym floor is being redone.Their victim were the La Joya Lady Coyotes after losing in three sets, 25-9, 25-9, 25-21.

SBHS Head Volleyball Coach Ruby Medina said Genesis Meza “led the offensive charge.” She had 10 kills and 3 blocks.

Kalista Olivares had 3 kills and as many blocks.

“Annalise Rodriguez struck hard defensively with outstanding plays,” Medina said.

Rodriguez had 7 aces and 3 kills.

Hayden Rodriguez, Isabel Gonzalez, Camila Guajardo, and Alexa Perea also contributed to the Lady ‘Hounds’ win.

They improved their season record to 9-6, with many of those victories coming during tournament play in Donna and Brownsville.

The Lady ‘Hounds played in seven matches in Brownsville from Aug. 21-23.

In order of play, the Lady ‘Hounds competed against Brownsville Hanna JV (won 25-12, 25-4), Brownsville Pace (lost 18-25, 11-25), Brownsville IDEA Riverview (won 25-13, 25-14), Brownsville Porter (won 25-14, 24-15), Lyford (won 26-25, 10-25, 17-15), Laredo LBJ (lost 21-25, 15-25), and Weslaco (lost 17-25, 20-25).

When comparing overall records against their District 32-6A foes, the Lady ‘Hounds can boast about being among the best.

Going into this week, only Brownsville Veterans Memorial had a better record at 7-4, followed by San Benito, and then Los Fresnos at 6-5. In fact, it was the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons who won the Brownsville Tournament after defeating Laredo LBJ.

Harlingen has a 3-5 overall record, and Brownsville Hanna is 1-4, respectively.

When it comes to kills, the Lady ‘Hounds depend on Genesis Meza’s presence at the net. She has a team-high 72 kills. Kalista Olivares follows with 40 kills, and then Annalise Rodriguez (37) and Valeria Enriquez (34).

Points leaders are Hayden Rodriguez with 56, followed by Jayla Delgado (52) and Meza (51).

Rodriguez leads San Benito in digs with 124. No one comes close to matching her in this statistical category as Annalise Rodriguez has 69, to Enriquez’s 65, respectively.

The Lady ’Hounds next play at Sharyland Pioneer on Friday during a two-day tournament.
