LOS FRESNOS, TX — A Fresnos teen died following a rollover crash which occurred last Tuesday, August 5, said officials with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).
The teen was identified as Angel Flores, 17, who DPS officials said died at the scene.
A 17-year-old female driver was hospitalized, according to a DPS statement.
Both teens were Los Fresnos Consolidated Independent School District (LFCISD) students, according to reports.
The crash occurred just after 12:30 p.m. on State Highway 100, east of San Roman Road and west of Old Port Isabel Road in Brownsville.
According to DPS, a black Ford Ranger, occupied by a female driver and Flores, was traveling eastbound on SH 100 at “an unsafe speed and hydroplaned before rolling over.” The road was reportedly slick after some slight rainfall.
The driver was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, but has since been released, DPS said.
Flores’ obituary describes him as a beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew, uncle, and friend. “Angel was taken from us far too soon. He was known for his kindness, gentle heart, and joyful spirit,” reads his obituary.
A proud member of the Los Fresnos High School Varsity Football Team and the Class of 2026, Angel was a hardworking young man who balanced school, sports, and work with dedication, his obituary continues.
He dreamed of attending the University of Texas at Austin and approached life with ambition and compassion.
Visitation was held on Friday, August 8, from 5 to 9 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home in San Benito.
A funeral mass was held on Saturday, August 9, at 2 p.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Los Fresnos, with interment at Los Cuates Cemetery, also in Los Fresnos.
An opportunity remains for the public to sign the online guestbook, light a remembrance candle, or send words of comfort to the family at www.thomaegarza.com.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the care of Thomae-Garza Funeral Home and Crematorium, 395 S. Sam Houston, San Benito, (956) 399-1331.
As news spread of the tragedy, which occurred less than week before the start of the 2025-26 School Year, the public took to social media to share their thoughts and condolences to Flores’ friends and family with San Benito Boys & Girls Club Director Liz Chavez calling the accident the worst news a parent can receive and a nightmare scenario as a parent.
Cameron County Sheriff’s candidate Jesus Rosas Jr. said the tragedy hit close to home, as Flores was his brother-in-law’s only son.
“Angel was looking forward to his senior year at Los Fresnos High School and was aiming to graduate in the top 10% of his class. He was brilliant, funny, and full of promise. I was fortunate to spend many holidays with him—he was always the one making everyone laugh, kind-hearted, and genuinely sweet,” said Rosas.
“We are heartbroken. Our deepest condolences go out to both sides of the family. We are still in disbelief and pray for peace, strength, and comfort during this unimaginable time,” he added.
“Rest in peace, Angel. You will be missed beyond words,” he concluded in a Facebook post.
The post garnered over 1,800 interactions and 877 comments, mostly words of condolences.
DPS continues to investigate the accident, which has included closing the section of road where the crash took place to conduct recreations of the incident.
