More than 100 youths are expected to attend two summertime camps hosted by the San Benito CISD’s basketball program next month.
Each of the camps scheduled Monday, June 2 through Thursday, June 5 are age age-appropriate and will be run by varsity coaches of both the San Benito High School Greyhounds’ (Luis Garza) and Lady Greyhounds’ (Abel Moreno) teams.
The camp called “Lil’ Dribblers” is aimed for incoming children who are entering third through sixth grades. The other camp is for youth who are entering grades 7-9.
These San Benito hoops camps have plenty of longevity as both coaches have seen kids become teens, some of them eventually earning a position on the varsity and junior varsity teams.
“It is an event we do every year since I’ve been here in the last few years; the boys and girls have worked together to correlate times and make sure we give every athlete at SBCISD an opportunity to come and learn the game,” Coach Moreno said. “Many of our campers come yearly to this event, so we get to see them grow, evolve and develop. We usually get a good number of students come out.”
Both men don’t go at it alone teaching the game as assistant coaches join in.
“We try to just get our students prepared for the upcoming school year. It is just a great opportunity for us as coaches to begin building relationships with future athletes, and we try to make it a fun event doing multiple activities to break the monotony of just dribbling and shooting.
“In the past 10 years, we’ve been able to really meet and begin developing these players, so by the time they come here to San Benito High School, we are very familiar with the students,” said Moreno, whose has been the Lady ‘Hounds coach for just over a decade.
Garza will enter his fifth season as the Greyhounds’ coach.
“We’ve had a great experience with the camp the last couple of years; the entire week is about loving the game and developing basic skills and drills. The final day, we top it off with a skills challenge,” Coach Garza said. “It has been an event dating back to Roy Garcia’s and Eddie Abrego’s tenures as coaches.”
The camps will be at Veterans Memorial Academy, 2115 North Oscar Williams Road. The Lil’ Dribblers Camp is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The camp for teens is divided among boys (1-3 p.m.) and girls (3-5 p.m.). Camp T-shirt will be given to participants.
