A man accused of texting while driving at the time of a fatal accident here was given a half-million dollar bond.
Luis Fernando Gonzalez Altamirano, 39, of Mexico, is said to have been texting while driving a semi-trailer at the time of an accident that claimed the life of an elderly San Benito resident.
Gonzalez Altamirano was arrested at the scene and later arraigned on a charge of criminal negligent homicide in the death of Lorenzo Guajardo, a 70-year-old San Benito resident.
Gonzalez Altamirano was later give a $500,000 bond upon his arraignment, according to the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident occurred at noon on Saturday in late April as the Texas Department of Public Safety [DPS] responded to the accident involving Gonzalez Altamirano’s red Kenworth semi-trailer and Guajardo’s blue Chevrolet Aveo on FM 1421 and Road 233.
According to a DPS statement, Guajardo slowed his vehicle down, attempting to make a left turn onto Road 233 when Gonzalez Altamirano allegedly collided with the Aveo.
Further investigation revealed that Gonzalez Altamirano was allegedly texting and driving at the time of the accident, according to the DPS.
The Kentworth tractor-trailer was traveling south on FM 1421 behind a Chevrolet Aveo, according to the DPS.
“Gonzalez Altamirano failed to control the speed of his vehicle, causing a collision with Guajardo’s vehicle,” noted a DPS statement.
Guajardo died from his injuries after he was hospitalized, the news release stated.
Gonzalez Altamirano remained in custody upon his arraignment.
