On Tuesday, the San Benito Lady Greyhound Softball Team lost a non-district game to the Lyford Lady Bulldogs, 12-9.

The home game against the Class 3A school had its shining moments and other plays the Lady ’Hounds would rather forget and move on from. It’s similar to the way the non-district portion of the Lady ’Hounds’ season has gone – there’s been positives with negatives.

San Benito still has a winning record, but the loss puts the team at 8-7-1. Zapata was the last foe San Benito played (Thursday, March 13) before it begins District 32-6A play against Brownsville Hanna on March 18.
“We have to get back on track and win,” San Benito Head Varsity Softball Coach Krystal Leal said. “We had a few miscues today, but we’ll figure it out. I have confidence in our players that we can get out of this.”

The game started well for the Lady ’Hounds as the sophomore duo of Evelynn Hinojosa and Arielle Hernandez provided the team with a 1-0 lead in the opening inning. Hinojosa got on base with a walk, and Hernandez followed the next at-bat with a left field hit that bounced off the outfield wall.

Hernandez was called out trying to reach third base on the same play.

The Lady Bulldogs’ production came in the middle innings when they scored a couple of runs in each of the second and third frames. Lyford took what appeared as an insurmountable lead when it added three more runs.

With San Benito hitters facing a 7-1 deficit in the bottom half of the fifth inning, the team took its second one-run lead of the game, complements of a couple of homeruns.

Sophomores Megan Medina (single) and Arianna Rodriguez (walk) scored a couple of runs to close the deficit to 7-3.

Then sophomore Jewelianah Mares, freshman Isabella Gonzalez, and Hinojosa load the bases to set up Hernandez’s batting prowess.

Hernandez, who started the game on the mound, hit a grand slam to tie the game.

Her teammates waited for her to turn the corner at third base to celebrate at home plate.

The next at-bat, senior Jozanna Montes followed with a homerun of her own for an 8-7 advantage. The Lady ‘Hounds once again crowded the home plate in maximum celebratory mode for Montes, but it was short-lived as Lyford responded with a five-run fifth inning. With two outs, San Benito scored a run in the seventh to close all scoring.

Following the Bayfront Bash Tournament in Corpus Christi, San Benito lost its next two non-district games to Corpus Christi Calallen (7-2 score) and Bishop (7-3 score).
