Attorney’s contract discussed

The San Benito Consolidated Independent School District [SBCISD] held a regular board of trustees meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 12. Board trustee Alejandro Reyna and board attorney Tony Torres were absent.

The meeting began with the pledge of allegiance, delivered by Noeli Tejeda, a fourth-grade student at Sullivan Environmental Science Academy [SESA]. Hannah Galarza, another fourth grader at SESA, delivered the invocation. The board recognized the Riverside Middle School seventh and eighth-grade soccer team for finishing the season undefeated.

Rosalinda Garcia opened public comments. She thanked the board for their community service and addressed check disbursements. She encouraged the board to keep cutting down on “excess spending.” She also commented on Baltazar Salazar, the district attorney, not regularly appearing at public meetings, and encouraged the district to hire an alternative.

Raul Delgado, a representative from San Benito Parks and Recreation announced the new Protect Our Nation’s Youth [PONY] League. According to its official website, PONY is a baseball and softball league dedicated to providing children with beneficial environments to encourage them to “grow into healthier and happier adults.”

The board approved various items on the consent agenda, including a cash request, the January 2025 cash account, the January 2025 Comparison of Revenue and Expenditures, the tax collection report, and the check disbursement report.

The board also approved two additional proposals on general merchandise for the district, gifts, and bequests, budget amendments, and purchases over $50,000. The board then approved revisions to the 2024-2025 compensation plan, the purchase of electrocardiogram machines, a change order request from the hurricane fence company for the fencing project at San Benito High School, and the Jan. 23 and 30 board meetings’ minutes.

The board discussed the retention of Salazar for his legal services and made no action on his employment. After coming out of the executive session, the board approved any employment, resignations, retirements, and terminations as discussed in the executive session.

The board made no action to renew term contracts for administrators for the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 school years, probationary contracts for consideration, and level three grievances.
