EDINBURG, TX—The San Benito Lady Greyhound Basketball Team has won games when it’s counted the most now that the postseason is upon them.
Since losing their final two District 32-6A games, they defeated the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons in a third-place tiebreaker, and more importantly won a bi-district away contest against the Edinburg North Lady Cougars (14-22 record) on Tuesday.
Now it’s on to the Class 6A area round, something the seniors on the team are familiar with.
“This will be our fifth time playing in an area game in eight years, and we want to keep advancing so we have to break that barrier somehow,” San Benito Coach Abel Moreno said.
The Lady ‘Hounds (23-13) played Laredo United South on Thursday, Feb. 13.
Against Edinburg North, the teams exchanged leads five times. San Benito took the lead for good at the 5:44 mark of the third quarter when senior Angelina Reyes scored a basket for a 28-26 advantage.
Before the end of quarter, the Lady ‘Hounds went up by as much as nine points.
San Benito’s offense played keep away and prevented North from getting possessions, and only had five points in the third quarter.
San Benito maintained its lead after being in the bonus with less than 90 seconds left in the game.
The Lady ‘Hounds went 7-of-10 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter.
One of North’s leads came at halftime, up 26-24.
Moreno said the defensive press on North players and San Benito possessions were important and as the game went on proved to be an effective way to win.
“We did that by design. We came in thinking we could press them and made adjustments at halftime,” Moreno said.
Reyes finished with a game-high 24 points, earning four treys along the way.
To play North, San Benito first had to contend with playing Los Fresnos a third time this season.
The third-place tiebreaker at home last Friday went by way of the Lady ‘Hounds in a 50-46 victory.
