Student-athletes from Bertha Cabaza and Miller Jordan middle schools recently were invited by the San Benito Lady Greyhounds’ soccer program to see what it is like to compete at the varsity level.

Lady ‘Hound Head Coach Wilbert Padron told his varsity players before their match against the Brownsville Hanna Lady Eagles that they are on the varsity team because they have earned it.

“Having them (middle schoolers) here in the stands with our fans should inspire you to play harder, so go out and show them who you are,” Padron said.

The play exhibited at Bobby Morrow Stadium was hard and physical.

The Lady ‘Hounds scored three goals, but Hanna found the net seven times. San Benito had been down by 2-0 goals at halftime.

They traveled to Los Fresnos a few days later to Leo Aguilar Stadium where the Lady Falcons won 5-0. All goals were scored in the first half.

“It’s clear that we have areas to improve upon, Los Fresnos is a tough opponent, but this experience can serve as a valuable lesson,” Padron said. “The team has a lot of potential, and I believe we can build on this moving forward. It’s all about learning from each game and continuing to develop our skills in practice as we progress through the season.”

To their defense, the Lady ‘Hounds did clamp down defensively against Los Fresnos.
Senior goalie Seiri Salas risked her body several times as she attacked fast-approaching Los Fresnos forwards and midfielders.

“Despite the halftime scoreboard, I was really impressed with how our team rallied together and played the second half,” Padron said. “Our goalie was exceptional, making crucial saves including a penalty kick.”
What makes this even harder to bear is the losses came as District 32-6A play began. San Benito is currently 0-2.

San Benito hosts Brownsville Veterans Memorial (1-3 record) Friday, and next Tuesday is at Harlingen (2-0). Both matches begin at 5:30 p.m.
