RIO HONDO, TX—The Bobcat and Lady Bobcat Varsity Basketball Teams were successful in netting victories at home and away against their District 32-3A foe, Progreso, on Tuesday night.

Both wins came in convincing fashion as the Bobcats and Lady ’Cats continue to prove that they are the best team in their district based on their records.

The Bobcats are now 9-1 in district following their 57-28 win over the Progreso Red Ants. Rio Hondo also defeated IDEA Frontier College Prep last week, 88-34.

“The two wins we picked up were great wins for us. The boys really played well, and we were able to build our chemistry with each other,” Bobcats Head Coach Mike Alvarez said. “Our focus was to really focus on our transition within the game. The boys are really getting up and down the court, beating our opponents down the court.”

Alvarez is of the opinion there are quality district opponents that could give Rio Hondo players fits.
The Lyford Bulldogs, with their 9-1 record, fit that bill as the Bobcats have them next in their scheduled Jan. 17 away game.

“We have a tough opponent, in Lyford, and my boys are really going to have to execute on both sides of the court (offensively and defensively),” Alvarez said.

Rio Hondo won an overtime game, 59-57 at home last month. The Bobcats’ lone district loss came against IDEA Sports Park, Dec. 31, but they have reeled off four consecutive district wins since then.

After the Bulldogs, the Bobcats then host IDEA Riverview on Jan. 21 and Santa Rosa on Jan. 24.

For the state-ranked Lady ’Cats, who are atop the district standings with a 12-0 record, the lone wonderment is if they will ever reach 100 points against any of their opponents.

In fact, they remain No. 6, according to the Texas Girls’ Coaches’ Association Class 3A poll.
Before their win over Progreso, the Lady ’Cats had beaten local IDEA teams Robindale (95-7), Weslaco Pike (93-27), and College Prep (98-2).

The Lady ’Cats began their second round of district games when they played again Progreso, which they defeated the first time at home by a 93-9 margin in early December. Tuesday, in an away game, they won, 72-2.

This Friday, Rio Hondo hosts Lyford (10-1). They beat the Lady Bulldogs last month, 56-34.
Santa Rosa is another 10-win team in district, but Rio Hondo won against the Lady Warriors easily, 81-37, in December.
